CPRE believe farming should be about more than simply growing crops.
It should be about:
• providing healthy, high quality food at a fair price
• securing a beautiful, diverse and accessible countryside
• contributing to vibrant rural communities
We are working to encourage this wider role for farming at all levels.
For example we undertook a survey in May 2005 with the National
Farmers' Union to come up with a first estimate for the cost of
the landscape management work undertaken by England's farmers. Our
research findings make a strong case for continued public support
for farming in return for the work needed to maintain a beautiful
countryside for the benefit of us all.
Farming and food remain key elements of the rural economy and we
want that to remain so, while seeing environmental and landscape
improvements through fund such as the Rural
Development Programme for England. We are represented on the
RDPE consultative group for the West Midlands.
To help support farming it is important that people have access
to local foods.
We work with other groups in the region promoting the importance
of farming such as the National
Farmers’ Union. You can read more at their Why
Farming Matters website.
