CPRE
believes the environment of the region is both an asset and a responsibility,
which needs to be carefully managed.
We
have some of the most tranquil countryside in the county, particularly
on the Welsh Marches. We also have beautiful countryside accessible
to our major towns and cities, much of it in the Green Belt.
But
equally our market towns and cities include parks, gardens and historic
buildings which are important to the communities and to the region.
In case, such as Stratford Upon Avon, they are of national and even
international importance.
The
most pressing threat to our environment is climate change, and CPRE
believes this needs to be seriously addressed using appropriate
technology. CPRE also believes we need to address those consequences
which are irreversible already, particularly reducing the impact
of flooding by reducing housebuilding in flood areas and working
with farmers to ensure floodplains are better able to absorb floods.
However,
Climate Change is not the only challenge, and for many in our region
what they value most is the landscape and tranquillity of areas
they live in or visit.
That
is why we are campaigning, for example, to reduce light pollution
and road side advertising.
But
the biggest threat to our countryside remains the intrusion of new
development, such as roads, houses and business parks and that is
why CPRE is keen to reduce their impact and to seek to mitigate
those impacts which cannot be avoided.
